Résumés are tricky: If done well, they can put you in the running for a job; if done poorly, they end up in the hiring manager's recycling bin. They should be easy since you're just talking about yourself. No one knows your work history, qualifications and skills better than you. Unfortunately, they are hard work.
Making years of experience fit on one or two pages is no easy task. Yet, while there is no one way to craft the perfect résumé, there are some moves guaranteed to hurt your job hunt.
Here are some résumé blunders you should avoid at all cost.
1. Forgetting the employer
Although the résumé is about you, it's not for you. After all, if you were the intended audience, you wouldn't bother sending it out. The résumé is meant to show prospective employers why you're the perfect match for the job. They want to see the skills, experience and qualifications mentioned in their job postings. If you have skills that don't line up exactly with the position but you know are transferrable, make that clear in the résumé. Don't assume they'll infer what you mean, because if they don't, you won't be considered for the job.

For one thing, it's not hard to verify any information you put down, so you could get caught at any point between submitting your résumé and getting a job offer. Plus, it's a small world, and the truth has a way of coming out when business associates bump into one another at conferences. If your boss mentions your name to your supposed former supervisor only to be told you never worked there, you could get fired.

Very insightful resume help blog. To add to point 2, I would suggest using a list of descriptive words to increase the chance of hitting those keywords. Many lists are available online, just search "resume descriptive words" in Google. Or go to http://www.theresumesource.com/descriptive-words/ for a great list of descriptive words.
Interesting. I've been self-employed for years so haven't had a resume in the better part of a decade. I'd heard that the "state of the art" had changed though.
When I hire somebody, I'm usually looking for a quick bulleted list of their top skills, along with a couple of decent contacts I can call to check them out.
I also usually hire somebody for a short timeframe contract, with the option to extend if things work out; this allows me to check if they're a "fit" for the organization - something that resumes (and even interviews) don't usually pick up.
In my role as a recruiter I assess resumes almost every day and there is a painful familiarity in reading this list.
The mistake on this list that I probably see the most is 'not proofreading.'
When I question candidates about spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes in our preparation interviews, many insist that they did get someone else to proofread their resume - but it was someone who was as ignorant as the candidate on spelling, grammar and punctuation!
We recommend that they invest in a professional to edit their resumes, which invariably increases their chances of success.
We've seen all the examples here plus a few more common mistakes we get:
Applying well after the closing date (often didn't read the full advertisement).
Excessive irrelevant information.
Derogatory information about previous employers.
It probably falls into Category 6 on your list: I've seen resumes with text message language in them! LOL!
